Debbie was new to working in home care, and her role as Community Connector put her right at the heart of the way we work to support people to be independent. Here’s her story.
When I moved to Devon in November 2016, I was looking for a company and a role with care for people at the heart of its business. I had worked in community settings before which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I had no experience working for the social care sector and I was intrigued to find out more. After seeing an advert for love2care online, I got in touch. In-depth telephone conversations and interviews followed, and I met Maddy Bird, the Registered Manager. This was a pivotal moment for me as she impressed me so much with her ethos and work ethic and I came back from my interview thinking, “I have to work for this lady – she is so inspirational!”.
I love my role as it is right at the heart of the business. The job itself is fluid, so that I can use creativity and judgment to help people in the best way I can. Part of this includes conducting regular reviews with people we support to ensure that the care being given is of the highest standard, and it’s a huge pleasure to hear wonderful feedback about our team. As well as this I organise our Summer and Christmas get togethers for the people we support, I write a monthly newsletter packed with news, activities and insights into what is happening in Torbay, and I help connect the people we support to services and activities in the community. I also have the opportunity to coach our team in one-to-one sessions to ensure they are getting the most they can from working for us.
Every day as a company we are focused on the health and wellbeing of the people we support. How many other companies can say that they can spend 100% of their time focused on people and making sure that they receive the very best care?
One of the proudest moments of my life so far came after our first year, when we were rated Outstanding by CQC. It is almost unheard of for a new provider to achieve this rating. Sharing this moment with Maddy and our exceptional team of carers was incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud to say, “I love2care.”
